The Department of Forests (DF) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment is the competent authority of Cyprus for the management and conservation of forest resources. It is the responsible Governmental Department for the management of State forests (including National Park Forests and Natural Forest Reserves). It is also responsible for reforestations and for establishing roadside plantations for improving the natural landscape. DF is extensively involved in the systematic study of Cyprus flora and fauna and especially in the conservation of endemic, rare and threatened plants. Recent activities have dealt with studying the vegetation of Cyprus. The Department employs professionals with forestry degrees (i.e. forest research and planning, landscape architecture, management of forests, parks and nature conservation, protection and preservation of wildlife, forest botany, etc.). Additionally, the Department is part of several biodiversity conservation projects, including the Life Project for the inventory, identification, evaluation and mapping of the habitat types and flora and fauna species in Cyprus.

It is also one of the main partners in the ongoing Life Project on the implementation of conservation management actions in five Natura 2000 Sites of Cyprus. The Department of Forests is responsible for the management of the Pafos Forest and is the competent authority for the development and implementation of a management plan for the area, in accordance to the EC Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC). The experience and expertise of the Department on forest conservation and management issues will be a valuable asset to the consortium.
