The Demokritos University of Thrace (DUTh) is a state university of Greece with a long academic and research history. The Department of Forestry and Management of the Environment and Natural Resources, despite its brief history, is situated in a campus (i.e. laboratory, teaching premises) which provides it with the possibility of a complete range of academic and research activities, including a rich up-
Academic staff has expertise on natural resources management, and has an important publications record, while it is experienced in independent research. The laboratory of Forest Genetics and Forest Tree Breeding has its own premises, where all necessary equipment provides the possibility of applying molecular markers and of measuring quantitative phenotypic and anatomic characteristics. Its team applies genetics in studying forest species and populations, and uses practical methods for the conservation of genetic resources. The team focuses on academic training, research, scientific publications and textbook development. Current research topics include the evolutionary processes of natural populations in Greece, i.e. migration and refugium of species in Greece, gene flow system within natural populations and genetic variation patterns of natural populations. The laboratory runs various national and international research programmes (i.e. Pythagoras, IKYDAD), in collaboration with other institutions, while it is home for a number of postgraduate students. Despite its brief operation time, the laboratory has a number of publications in international journals.
