PHRAGMOGRAPHYSIS
Restoring Free-Flowing Rivers along the Diarizos Catchment, Cyprus
PHRAGMOGRAPHYSIS is a river restoration project focused on improving connectivity within the Diarizos catchment, Cyprus. The project will deliver the country's first field-verified, open-access inventory and interactive map of river barriers, documenting their location, characteristics, condition, ownership, and ecological impacts.
Through extensive field surveys covering more than 100 km of river network, the project will identify and prioritise non-essential barriers with restoration potential, providing a scientific basis for future river restoration actions. Particular emphasis is placed on improving connectivity for the critically endangered European eel and enhancing ecological integrity across four Natura 2000 sites.
Funded by the Open Rivers Programme and implemented by the Nature Conservation Unit of the Frederick Research Center in partnership with Terra Cypria, the project will provide the scientific evidence needed to support future barrier removal initiatives and contribute to the restoration of free-flowing rivers in Cyprus.
